OBE - Out Of Body Experience
In contrast to an NDE, when the human spirit leaves a dead body, in an OBE the body is alive. It can happen involuntarily, as occurs frequently in a shock situation or by intent. The term was coined by Robert Monroe, after he had accidentally discovered, that he could leave his body. The phenomenon however has been reported since the beginning of mankind's history, generally labelled 'Astral Projection/Travel'. It has been employed through the ages by shamans, mystics, psychics or philosophers like Søren Kierkegaard and Rudolf Steiner to expand their knowledge of the world.
While the ability can appear sponteneously, it can and has been taught in many cultures as standard topic for an aspiring shaman or Tibetan lama (Gyu-lü). After publicising his discovery in a series of books and coining a modern term for it, Robert Monroe introduced it as teachable subject into western culture and established the 'Monroe Institute' for that purpose. Since then it has become an widely accepted phenomenon, with other teachers like William Buhlman and Graham Ncholls developing the instruction techniques. With increasing psychic abilities of incoming generations, it is frequently reported as spontaneous appearing ability.
